Bien des ménages survivent grâce à cette carrière, la production des graviers apporte aux ménages un peu de revenus et permet aux hommes de contribuer à l’effort de lutte contre la famine. Cependant, les effets des poussières générées par cette activité sont redoutables pour la santé, surtout respiratoire. Les dépenses consécutives à la prise en charge des pathologies qui en résultent pourraient être très important ; sinon de loin supérieures au gain réalisé si l’on considère la gravité des maladies qui en résulteraient.
